Nigeria’s contingent to the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in Nur-Sultan – the capital city of Kazakhstan – will depart the country on Friday, 13th September.
The delegation, which is made up of six athletes – all of whom won gold at the recently concluded 12th African Games in Morocco – and two coaches, will be led by president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Hon. Daniel Igali. They are billed to depart Nigeria via a Turkish airline flight.
In the Women Wrestling style, World no 3 Odunayo Adekuoroye (57kg), winner of a silver medal in the global showpiece in 2017, is joined by African champions Blessing Onyebuchi (76kg) and Mercy Genesis (50kg) as well as reigning Commonwealth gold medallists Blessing Oborududu (68kg) and Aminat Adeniyi (62kg), while 3-time African champion Emmanuel Ogbonna (74kg), the only male athlete in the team, will be competing in the Freestyle event.
In Kazakhstan, the athletes will be under the watchful eyes of coaches; Purity Akuh and Victor Kodei.
Medallists at the World Championships, which runs from 14th to 22nd September, will automatically qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
