As the curtains draw to a close at the North Central Zonal Eliminations of the 8th National Youth Games in Jos, Plateau State, Team Nasarawa has emerged as a strong contender, securing qualifications to the main events scheduled for Asaba, Delta State, next month.
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Team Nasarawa’s Girls’ Hockey team secured their passage by defeating Plateau State with a convincing 2-0 victory. Their triumph not only guaranteed their spot but also saw their opponents, Plateau State, advancing to the main events in Asaba as well.
“We’ve faced challenges, but our team’s resilience and determination have seen us through. Asaba, here we come!” said the coach of Team Nasarawa’s Girls’ Hockey Team, reflecting the spirit and drive of the entire contingent.
Similarly, despite a loss in Girls’ Volleyball to Team Benue, Team Nasarawa secured enough points to earn their ticket to Asaba. The team remains optimistic about their chances in the main events.
The Boys’ Hockey team added to the growing list of victories for Nasarawa, securing a hard-fought 1-0 win over the hosts, Plateau State. With only a draw needed in their upcoming match against Niger State, the team is confident of sealing their place at the prestigious Games in Asaba.
However, not all results were favorable. Both the Boys’ Football and Handball teams fell short in their respective challenges, bringing an early end to their hopes of representing the Zone at the national level.
Despite the setbacks, Team Nasarawa’s performance in Boys’ Basketball was commendable, with victories over Plateau and Niger States. A loss to Team FCT, Abuja, has made the race for Asaba tighter, but hopes remain high as the action resumes tomorrow to determine which teams will advance.
As the North Central Zonal Eliminations draw to a close on Saturday, 31st August 2024, Team Nasarawa remains focused and determined, aiming to finish strong and earn the title of the team of the tournament. All eyes now turn to the upcoming National Youth Games in Asaba, where these young athletes will showcase their talent on a grander stage.
