Olawuni Destiny made the cut for the Team Lagos FC Women squad for the Edo state festival starting in a few days’ time.
In a wide-ranging interview with Sports247, the lady nicknamed ‘face of Lagos’ discusses her team’s chances at the festivals and details personal information about herself.
Olawuni told Sports247: “As part of the squad, we are fully prepared for the festival in Edo state. We look forward to bringing the gold medal back to Lagos state because of our dedication and determination to the game.”
Full of optimism, she aims to progress to the professional level of the game after the tournament.
“Yes, after the festival I wish to be on the professional side. For now, I don’t think I have any team in mind. But after the festival games I hope to be with a professional team,” she reveals.
Olawuni describes herself as a versatile player who can put in a shift in all areas of the pitch.
“I am a utility player. I can play from any position and that’s the opportunity I have to be on the festival team. I can play from the defense, attack, and midfield. I see myself as an important player to the team because I can feature in any part of the field.”
Being tagged the ‘face of Lagos’ by locals comes with a sense of pride. Olawuni explains how the moniker came about.
“They call me the face of Lagos because most of the female footballers we are having in Lagos state dresses like males. But I decided to dress as the female that I am.
“I don’t know but people say that I am beautiful and I act so much like a lady despite the fact that I am playing football.
“The coach that started to call me that name is coach Adesina of Lagos state. He always calls me ‘face of Lagos’. That was how everybody decided to be calling me the face of Lagos. It’s not as if it’s part of my name.”
Olawuni Destiny is renowned for her catchy hairstyles and the frequency with which she changes them. She cites Francisca Ordega as a huge influence.
“I decided to be making different hairstyles according to my role model which is from the Super Falcons side – Francisca Ordega.
“Let me say I am following her steps that’s why I decided to be a fashionable footballer.”
She moved on to explain that being a football player as a lady doesn’t mean she should imitate the males. She does it a lady’s way.
“Playing football doesn’t mean I should act like a guy. I am a female so I decided to be the lady that I am. I don’t need to dress like a guy before people know I am playing ball.
“I love to change my hairstyles in order to beautify myself. Playing football doesn’t mean I should look weird.”
When asked where her fashion sense steams from, she disclosed: “I am a stylist. That’s the skill that I learned.
“I make hair for people and all that. For the fact that am a stylist, people ought to see those things on me so that they will admire it and call me for business.”
