Athletes and officials of Team Anambra have arrived in Ilorin, capital of Kwara State, for the 6th National Youth Games (NYG) which holds from 10th to 20th October 2021. The contingent was in high spirit when they arrived in a convoy of buses at the University of Ilorin Sunday night for the annual National Sporting programme. The athletes were lodged at two private hostels inside the University of Ilorin; Abuja Hostel, Village 3 (Female) and Zapel Hostel (Male).
Team Anambra, comprising of 115 athletes and 40 officials, which includes coaches, managers and medical staff, left Awka on Sunday morning after they had received pep talks from the Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), Hon. Chief Tony Oli at the Fr. Obiefuna Retreat Centre Okpuno, Awka, Anambra State, venue of their camp.
Team Anambra had earlier embarked on two-week camping to prepare for the annual national sporting programme for athletes under the ages of 15 years from the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who are expected to participate in about 34 sporting events.
Before their departure, Oli, admonished the athletes to make excellence their watchword in their actions both on and off the field of play as they are not just representatives of the state but also ambassadors. The Chairman stated that they should be focused, work hard and pray as a team always in order to achieve success. He also revealed that all their needs for the Games have been provided by the Executive Governor of the State, His Excellency Chief Willie Obiano.
Team Anambra will participate in 16 events namely Athletics, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Chess, Cricket, Gymnastics, Judo, Karate, Scrabble, Chess, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Kung fu, Taekwondo, and Table Tennis. Team Anambra won 18 medals, 7 Gold, 3 Silver and 8 Bronze, at the 5th National Youth Games (NYG) in Ilorin held in 2019.
