Taiwo Awoniyi has been nominated for the 2022 Berlin Footballer of the Year award. Awoniyi was shortlisted on the back of an excellent 2021/22 season with Union Berlin.
The Nigerian hit 20 goals in all competitions, including a memorable brace on the last day of the season against VfL Bochum, which helped Union to a 5th place finish in the Bundesliga and a spot in next season’s Europa League.
The award is organized by the Berlin Football Association in partnership with LOTTO Berlin and magazine Fußball-Woche to recognize the best performing footballer in Germany’s capital city. Awoniyi was nominated for the honor alongside four of his teammates.
“In partnership with Fußball Woche and LOTTO Berlin, the city’s football federation is on the hunt to name the 2022 Berlin Footballer of the Year. The vote is online and runs until Monday June 13,” Union Berlin announced.
“In with a chance of winning the male category, FC Union Berlin’s Christopher Trimmel, Taiwo Awoniyi, Robin Knoche and Grischa Prömel have been nominated following a successful 21/22 Bundesliga and European campaign.”
Awoniyi has been linked with a transfer away from Germany this off-season, with several Premier League clubs showing interest. Newcastle, West Ham and Southampton are all rumored to be in running to sign the former Liverpool striker.
