The Super Eagles star, Taiwo Awoniyi netted a brace in the last game of the season against VFL Bochum to end the season on a high, booking Union’s place in next season’s Europa League group stages in the process.
Union Berlin and Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi placed 6th in the 2021/22 Bundesliga scoring charts after notching up 15 goals in 31 league matches. Awoniyi scored twice including an 88th minute winner against Bochum in the final game of the season on Saturday to help Union to a 5th place finish.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a remarkable 2021/12 campaign, which is the most productive of his career yet. His 15 goals is the 6th most in the German topflight behind the likes of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski (35), Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland (22) and RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku (20), among others.
Awoniyi scored 20 goals across all competitions with four coming in the Europa Conference League, and a sole strike in the DFB Pokal. He appeared in 43 matches all season while also adding three assists.
The former Liverpool man has been linked with a move away from Union with a host of Premier League clubs believed to be plotting a summer move for him. According to Goal.com, Southampton FC, West Ham United, and Newcastle are all showing interest in the striker.
