Table Tennis Coaches Should Select On Merit – Ojomu

Ladies’ table tennis singles gold medalist at the recent 19th National Sports Festival in Abuja, Ajoke Ojomu has called on national team coaches to select players on merit.

Sports247.ng gathered that Ojomu, who beat Cecilia Otu-Akpan of Cross River State 4-1 in the Abuja 2018 final to grab the Festival gold medal, is now thinking of representing Nigeria at the All Afirca Games next year.

However, the 400 level Physical and Health Education undergraduate at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria believes she would only get the chance to don Nigeria’s colours if the selectors are not biased.

While confessing that she would have loved to meet Nigeria’s female number one, Funke Oshonaike during the Festival in Abuja, Ojomu said she has what it takes to reign as top seed.

However, Ojomu, who also beat Nimota Aregbesola of Lagos State 4-1 in the ladies semi-final, after the latter had ousted Oshonaike, admitted that she would be able to forge ahead if there are regular tournaments.

Ojomu further noted: “The sports festival brought out who is who in all categories among our national players, home and abroad.

“I would have loved to meet Funke Oshonaike, and I would have beaten her, but she was defeated earlier in the quarter-final.

“If the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation decide to organise top-20 to determine the best men and women, I am sure I will maintain the top position among the women because I know my capabilities.

“I believe I can rule Africa and the Commonwealth, if the handlers do not politicise the selection of players for the national assignments.”
