Nigeria’s King on the Clay, Sylvester Emmanuel has joined the growing calls for more Clay Court tournaments in the country to provide Nigeria a comparative advantage in Africa, particularly during the Davis Cup.
Emmanuel, who gained prominence following his sojourn to Spain, the Clay Court capital of the world, insists the need to expose more Nigerian players to frequent competitive matches on clay was imperative for success across board.
“Clay Court tournaments do take place frequently in other countries unlike Nigeria, where it rarely happens. For someone like me it’s very worrisome because we find it difficult competing with our contemporaries when the need arises on Clay Court,” Sylvester Emmanuel admitted in an interview with Sports247.ng.
“It’s always a demerit to us whenever we are engaged during the Davis Cup. I feel we need to be more involved in Clay Court competitions in Nigeria just like every other surface to give us comparative advantage in Africa.”
