Reflecting on the situation, Okpala highlighted the benefits of having a home-based team already in camp before the arrival of players based outside Nigeria.

“What followed was that already we had a home-based team that we were in camp with before those playing outside Nigeria came and joined us.”

He emphasized that this existing setup provided a very important foundation, allowing for a seamless integration of players into the squad.

Okpala remarked, “For now, he can’t bring them in. It’s not possible because we had about one year plus, we were training them, being in camp with them from time to time, playing some friendly matches both years.”

The former Super Eagles assistant coach further expressed his expectation for the home-based players to have undergone substantial training and preparation, suggesting a comprehensive training program spanning over a year.

He envisioned a scenario where the players would have benefited from physical training, friendly matches, and an extended period of collective preparation.

“I had expected them to be at least in a camp train and from there move on. Some physical training and some friendly matches, at least two to three weeks in camp”

While acknowledging the challenges posed by time constraints, Okpala urged caution and advocated for a strategic approach to player selection.

He emphasized, “Let’s see how it goes. Maybe that’s how they wanted it.” His remarks underscore the need for a balanced consideration of the available time and the importance of ensuring that the best legs are selected to represent Nigeria at AFCON.

As the football community awaits the final squad announcement for AFCON, Okpala’s insights shed light on the intricacies involved in making last-minute changes and the critical importance of strategic decision-making in the lead-up to the tournament.
