This plea coincides with the planned protests set to occur in various parts of Nigeria on August 1, 2024.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin through the Association’s Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, it was emphasized that while citizens have the right to protest, such actions should be conducted peacefully.
President Benjamin recalled the damage caused to national assets during past protests and urged demonstrators to protect sports infrastructure, which is crucial for the country’s development.
“Instead of engaging in the destruction of lives and properties, citizens should reflect on positive and progressive moves aimed at ensuring improved sports development, which has the potential to uplift the country’s economy,” he stated.
Mr. Benjamin highlighted the significant economic potential of sports, noting that it serves as a catalyst for growth and development. He encouraged sportsmen and women, including athletes, officials, administrators, and the media, to lead by example in promoting positive conduct and influence in their communities.
“As the second most economically viable option in the world, sports serve as a catalyst for needed growth and development in any society. Therefore, sportsmen and women have the responsibility to lead the way in terms of conduct and influence in our various residential and public places,” he said.
He also urged leaders at all levels to adopt legislative measures that would eliminate bureaucratic obstacles hindering sports development in Nigeria. He stressed the importance of making Nigeria a hub for talent discovery and development, given the country’s vast human resources.
“There is a need for continuous engagement with all stakeholders to harness and engage them meaningfully. The role of the private sector, which is a major driving force of the economy, is critical in this regard,” Benjamin added.
Moreover, he called on the government to enhance sports infrastructure at the grassroots level to engage young people constructively, as sports can significantly reduce unemployment with the right funding.
“As professional sports writers, we are ever ready to offer useful contributions in the form of advice and practical steps that will make a meaningful impact,” assured the SWAN President.
In summary, SWAN’s call is a clarion for peaceful advocacy and constructive dialogue, leveraging sports as a vehicle for national development and social cohesion.
