The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has lauded the remarkable performance of the nation’s Senior Women’s Basketball team, D’Tigress, at the ongoing 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Despite a 74-88 quarter-final loss to the USA, D’Tigress’ achievements have garnered widespread acclaim.
In a statement issued by SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, through Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, the Association emphasized the significance of D’Tigress’ victories over top basketball nations like Australia and Canada.
Mr. Benjamin called for national recognition and a special reception for the team, celebrating their contribution to elevating Nigeria and Africa on the global stage.
“As sports journalists, we’ve closely monitored and analyzed the performance of our Women’s Basketball Team. Stakeholders across the globe have praised D’Tigress’ exceptional display, even before the Paris Olympics,” Benjamin stated.
He highlighted D’Tigress’ dominance in African basketball, winning the Afrobasket tournament four consecutive times, likening it to winning the Africa Cup of Nations in football. Their latest continental victory was particularly notable, achieved with a team assembled just weeks before the championship.
“At this year’s Olympics, D’Tigress further demonstrated their quality, showing resilience and passion that should embody our national values. Their record-breaking run in Paris, becoming the first African basketball team, male or female, to reach the Olympic quarter-finals, is truly commendable,” Benjamin added.
The SWAN President proposed that the team be honored as Worthy Ambassadors with a Special Reception in Nigeria. Such recognition, he argued, would not only show appreciation for their dedication but also inspire the players and coaching staff to continue their impressive performance in upcoming competitions, including the Basketball World Cup and other continental events.
In conclusion, Benjamin remarked, “Honoring these girls will motivate them for future exploits, ensuring they remain a source of pride for Nigeria and Africa in the global sporting arena.”
