The 2018 Week of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Bayelsa State Chapter got underway today amidst pomp and ceremony with the Clinton Thompson Football Cup Competition heralding the Week long activities.
Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Daniel Iworiso- Markson who performed the official kick off this morning at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa applauded the efforts of the State SWAN Executive and the Local Organising Committee for putting in place the program.
Mr. Iworiso-Markson who described Sports as a veritable vehicle for recreation and friendship stressed the need for such events to be organised frequently for media professionals in the state.
He reiterated the support of the government to the SWAN Week.
In a remark, the Chairman, Bayelsa Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr. Samuel Numonengi Stated that the football tournament and the 6km Road Race coming up on Saturday would further assists members of the pen pushing profession to relax and build bonds of friendship.
The State SWAN Chairman, Mr. Alambo Datonye and the Head of the Local Organising Committee for the Week, Loveday Herbert called on participants to compete fairly and savour the several events put in place to ensure mental and physical fitness.
In the Opening game of the Clinton Thompson Cup, Bayelsa Newspaper Corporation “New Waves’ pounded the Federated Correspondents Chapel 5-0 with four of the goals scored in the first half.
The second match saw Niger Delta Television walk over the Bayelsa Federated Newspapers Publishers Association who failed to show up.
With two other games scheduled for later in the evening, four other knockout ties come up on Tuesday.
The winners progress to the Quarter Finals scheduled for Wednesday as Semi Finals are due to hold on Thursday while Third Place and Final matches hold on Friday.
The 6km Road Race then take place at 6.30am from the INEC Junction along the Yenagoa-Mbiama Road, terminating at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex for medals and trophy presentation ceremonies.
Later on Saturday a dinner and award night holds at the NUJ Press Center, Azikoro Road.
A Thanksgiving Service holds on Sunday along No.1 Christ Church Road, Beside Bestbreed International Schools, Mabinton Estate, Okaka to round off the Week.
