Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong shared his thoughts on the team’s performance in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), emphasizing the challenges faced and the importance of team spirit.
“We did everything that we could have done. And, yeah, it wasn’t easy. I think for us to have scored six goals today would have been maybe unrealistic.

So all being said, I think we can be happy with winning, and we tried to do the best that we could and control the things we could control,” Troost-Ekong reflected on the team’s efforts in securing victories.
Acknowledging the quality of the opponents, Troost-Ekong highlighted the competitive nature of AFCON, stating, “They were good. I’ve been saying that the whole AFCON now that every team that we played against is good.
So I think on paper, you can have so-called better teams, but on the pitch, every time we’re seeing that, it can be a different story. So I think it sums up the AFCON, and I think the level is increasing every year.”
When asked about the team’s approach and motivation, Troost-Ekong emphasized the positive team spirit within the squad, stating, “I think we just want to encourage each other, make sure that we are playing the way we want to play.
And I think now we have such a good team, we have an honest squad. I think we can speak to each other; we can motivate each other, and I think, you can see the team spirit.”
As the Super Eagles advance to the knockout stages, Troost-Ekong’s reflections provide insights into the team’s cohesion and determination to navigate the challenges of the tournament.
