William Troost-Ekong, the vice-captain of the Super Eagles, has expressed disappointment in the team’s 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in the AFCON 2024 opener.
While acknowledging that it was not a good day at the office, Ekong highlighted the missed opportunities but stressed the importance of building on the performance in the upcoming clash against Ivory Coast.
In his assessment of the match, Ekong commented, “Like always, we can’t underestimate anyone, I don’t think we did that. So with the conditions, it was a slower game. But we have to look at the positives, we created so many chances. And on another day maybe we’ll score three or four.”
The vice-captain conveyed a message of resilience to the team, emphasizing the need to focus on the positives despite the disappointment of not securing a win.
He acknowledged the team’s unhappiness with the result but highlighted the importance of moving forward with a constructive mindset.
“This is the message that we tried to give to the boys, but of course we are unhappy and we came here to win the game and we didn’t do that. So one point now, we have to look at the next game,” Ekong stated.
As the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial encounter against Ivory Coast, Troost-Ekong‘s comments reflect a commitment to learning from the opener and a determination to create more goal-scoring opportunities in the upcoming fixture.
The vice-captain’s leadership underscores the team’s collective focus on improvement and success in the ongoing AFCON tournament.
