Nigeria’s national women’s football team, the Super Falcons, have touched down in Brisbane, Australia, as they gear up for their final preparations ahead of the highly anticipated 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The squad, along with their officials, were warmly received on arrival by a FIFA team and members of the Nigerian community, setting a positive tone for their stay.
Under the guidance of coach Randy Waldrum, the Super Falcons will be based at the luxurious Sofitel Hotels in Brisbane. Prior to their arrival in Brisbane, the team spent approximately two weeks in Gold Coast, focusing on the initial leg of their intensive training program.
In a recent friendly match, the West African side demonstrated their strength and prowess on the field, securing an emphatic 8-1 victory over the Australian team, Queensland Lions FC. Barcelona Femeni star Asisat Oshoala stood out, netting two goals during the encounter.
Contributions from Ifeoma Onumonu, Rasheedat Ajibade, Monday Gift, Toni Payne, and Uchenna Kanu added to the Super Falcons’ impressive goal tally.
As the tournament draws near, the Super Falcons will depart for Melbourne on the eve of their opening fixture against the reigning Olympic champions, Canada. The highly anticipated match is scheduled to take place at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Friday, July 21.
In their group, Nigeria will also face off against co-hosts Australia and the Republic of Ireland, promising an intense and competitive stage of the tournament.
