The Super Falcons of Nigeria will be receiving their prize money directly from the Federation of Internationale Football Association (FIFA) for their participation in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
FIFA Secretary-General, Fatma Samoura, made the announcement during a heartwarming encounter with the Nigerian women’s team in their dressing room at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium after their final group game, which ended in a 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland.
In a video shared by UK-based Nigerian journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana, Samoura praised the Super Falcons, stating that their exemplary performance has led to this unprecedented decision by FIFA.
This marks the first time in the history of FIFA’s Women’s World Cup that the prize money will be paid directly to the players themselves.
FIFA’s director for Africa, Gelson Fernandes, confirmed the news to Obayiuwana, disclosing that Samoura, who will be leaving her position with the international governing body in a few months, has given him the mandate to ensure that the players receive their well-deserved prize money directly.
Earlier, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had announced that the payments would be made to the individual federations, leaving it to them to distribute the funds to the players. However, Samoura’s revelation now ensures a direct and immediate reward for the players’ hard work and dedication.
The Federation of Internationale Football Association had previously stated that each of the 732 players participating in the Women’s World Cup would receive a minimum payment of $30,000.
The amount would increase based on team performance, with players of the winning team earning an impressive $270,000 each.
This $30,000 payment represents a significant payday for many players, considering that the average annual salary for women playing professionally worldwide is around $14,000.
For the Super Falcons, their journey in the 2023 Women’s World Cup has been a successful one so far. Having qualified for the round of 16, each player has already earned $90,000, which includes an appearance fee of $30,000 paid by FIFA.
Now, with the new development, the players will receive an additional $30,000 for their performance in the Group Stage and an extra $60,000 for reaching the knockout round.
The Super Falcons’ impressive achievements in the tournament have not only made them proud representatives of Nigeria but also paved the way for a landmark moment in women’s football.
The direct payment of prize money by the Federation of Internationale Football Association acknowledges the players’ efforts and offers greater financial support, further enhancing the growth and recognition of women’s football on the global stage.
