The most recent addition to the squad is former Juventus midfielder Echegini, who joined the team’s base on Saturday afternoon. Echegini’s arrival boosts the squad as they gear up for the crucial warm-up fixtures and the main event in Paris.
Eight players, including captain Rasheedat Ajibade and dynamic midfielder Christy Ucheibe, had already arrived from Nigeria on Friday morning, marking the initial wave of the team’s assembly in Spain. However, 12 more players, such as forward Chiwendu Ihezuo and star striker Asisat Oshoala, are still expected to join the camp ahead of their international friendly against Canada on July 17.
The Super Falcons have been hit by a setback with the injury to their midfield linchpin, Halimatu Ayinde. Coach Randy Waldrum is now tasked with naming a replacement from a pool of alternate players, which includes Ifeoma Onumonu, Gift Monday, Morufa Ademola, and Jumoke Alani. Ayinde’s absence is a significant blow, but the team remains focused on finalizing their preparations.
Nigeria’s Olympic campaign kicks off in Group C, where they will face formidable opponents: Brazil, Spain, and Japan. This group is one of the toughest, promising high-stakes matches. The Super Falcons begin their journey against Brazil on July 25, followed by a clash with Spain on July 28, and wrapping up the group stage against Japan on July 31.
For the Super Falcons, the Paris 2024 Olympics represent a historic return to the global stage, and their camp in Sevilla is a critical phase in their quest to make a lasting impact at the Games. With final squad preparations underway, the team is poised to put their best foot forward as they aim for glory in Paris.
