The conflict has resulted in the loss of over 2,000 lives in the region.
Israel and Palestine have a long history of tensions and hostilities, but the situation escalated in the past few days following an attack by Hamas.
This led to increased violence between Israel and Gaza, with reports indicating that over 2,100 lives have been lost on both sides, according to Al Jazeera.
Among the concerns arising from the conflict is the safety of Nigerian players in Israel, including John Ogu, who currently plays for Maccabi Jaffa, and Adebayo Adeleye, who was named in the 25-man squad for Nigeria’s friendly games against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique.
Ogu, who has earned 26 caps for the Super Eagles, took to video to reassure his well-wishers and fans. In his message, he stated, “So here I am. To everyone checking up on me, thank you very much. I really appreciate you guys, I appreciate your messages, and I am safe. Just pray for Israel; it means a lot.”
The 35-year-old midfielder has spent a significant portion of his professional career in Israel and has continued to represent Nigeria. In the current season, he has made six appearances for his club.
Ogu’s safety is not only a relief to his fans and well-wishers but also highlights the challenges faced by professional athletes in regions affected by conflict.
The ongoing Israel-Palestine situation remains a matter of global concern, with many hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
