The deal sees Olorunleke joining the esteemed Red Devils, although he will finish the current NPFL season with Enyimba before making the transition.
Olorunleke’s journey to Al Merrikh comes after an impressive stint with Enyimba, where he became a key figure in their success, helping the team secure a record ninth NPFL title last season.
Known for his remarkable reflexes and leadership between the posts, Olorunleke has solidified his reputation as one of the premier goalkeepers in the Nigerian league. His contributions have been pivotal in Enyimba’s current third-place standing, with crucial matches against Sporting Lagos and Plateau United still to come.
The Kogi-born shot-stopper’s career has seen him rise through the ranks of several NPFL clubs. Before his tenure at Enyimba, Olorunleke showcased his skills at Abia Warriors, Sunshine Stars, Giwa United, and Akwa United, steadily building his reputation and experience.
Internationally, Olorunleke’s talents were recognized when he was selected by coach Jose Peseiro for the Super Eagles squad that clinched the silver medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. His inclusion in the national team highlights his growing prominence on the African football stage.
Al Merrikh, founded in 1908, is one of Africa’s oldest and most decorated football clubs. With 22 Sudan Premier League titles and 26 Sudanese Cups to their name, the Red Devils are a powerhouse in Sudanese football.
Their last league triumph was in the 2019/20 season, and they finished second in the 2022/23 campaign before the outbreak of civil war halted league activities.
The ongoing civil unrest in Sudan has disrupted domestic football, prompting clubs like Al Hilal to seek participation in the Tanzanian league. Despite these challenges, Al Merrikh’s acquisition of Olorunleke underscores their ambition to rebuild and remain competitive on the continental stage.
As Olorunleke prepares to join Al Merrikh, fans and analysts alike will be watching how his skills and experience contribute to the team’s future successes. This move not only marks a new chapter in his career but also highlights the enduring connection between Nigerian and Sudanese football.
