Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have made a slight improvement in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Rankings, moving up from 40th to 39th position.
The rankings, released by the world football governing body on Thursday, reflect the team’s recent performance and standing in global football.
In the African continent, the Super Eagles currently hold the sixth position, trailing behind Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt.
The team’s one-place climb in the rankings can be attributed to their recent 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone in Group A of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, which took place in Monrovia, Liberia.
Previously ranked 40th in the rankings released on April 6, Nigeria’s upward movement demonstrates their ongoing efforts to strengthen their position in international football.
Meanwhile, Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, continue to hold the top spot in the rankings after securing friendly wins against Australia and Indonesia. France and Brazil retain their positions in second and third place, respectively, while England and Belgium occupy the fourth and fifth spots.
The next FIFA world ranking update is scheduled for release on July 20, 2023, providing further insight into the shifting dynamics of national teams across the globe.
Nigeria’s highest-ever ranking in the FIFA rankings occurred in 1994 when the team reached an impressive 5th position. This milestone remains the highest ranking achieved by any African team to date.
As the Super Eagles strive to climb further up the rankings, their recent progress indicates their determination to compete at the highest level and solidify their status as a force to be reckoned with in international football.
