Boniface, who joined the German Bundesliga side last summer from Belgian Jupiler League’s Union St Gillaloise, shared insights into the influence Alonso has had on his development.
The young Nigerian forward disclosed that Alonso drew inspiration from the legendary Didier Drogba to instill a fighting mentality in him. Boniface spoke highly of Alonso’s coaching methods, stating, “Everybody knew him as a great player, he (Alonso) was fantastic and won everything in football. He’s really heped me a lot and tried to advise me.”
Alonso’s choice of Drogba as a role model for Boniface was intentional, emphasizing the importance of physical strength and a resilient mindset. Boniface revealed, “He gave me the example of Didier Drogba, saying he was big and strong, and he wants the same from me. He was trying to put that type of mentality in my head because I’m the type of guy who just wants to have a good game.”
Despite Boniface’s inclination towards contributing to the team’s success beyond scoring goals, Alonso is keen on refining his mindset to become a more determined and competitive player. Boniface acknowledged the impact of this coaching philosophy, emphasizing, “Even if I’m not scoring, it doesn’t matter, as long as we are winning. But he wants to try and change that mentality, for me to become a fighter. He’s a top, top coach.”
This revelation comes amid Boniface’s outstanding performance this season, having scored 10 goals and provided 17 assists in just 16 matches. As Bayer Leverkusen continues its campaign, the synergy between Boniface and Coach Alonso appears to be a pivotal factor in the player’s growth and the team’s success. Football enthusiasts will be watching eagerly to see how this mentorship unfolds in the seasons to come.
