Sunkanmi Odusina scored the only goal of the game as Gateway United pipped visiting Vandrezzer Football Club 1-0 today at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto Abeokuta.
In a match day three of the Nigeria National League encounter, the two teams began with some end to end attacking displays, but the defenders on duty were extremely resolute in the first half.
Gateway United increased the tempo in the second half and was rewarded with the opening goal immediately after the restart
A long ball into the visitors box led to a defensive mix up in the Vandrezzer defence, Odusina Sunkanmi finished exquisitely to send the home crowd into frenzy.
Opportunities came towards the end of the game, but none was converted as Gateway United recorded their second win of the season.
Gateway United have now picked six points from possible nine, while Vandrezzer remain without a win after three games in the 2021/2022 Nigeria National League season.
*Coach reaction*
Coach Toyin Ayinla was elated with the hard fought victory but believes the best is yet to come from his side
“We thank the Almighty for this result. Quite important for us to have the three points. There are some areas we have gone wrong; we are not going back to the drawing board, we go back to training and make corrections”
“The league is still young, we keep improving, it will be a better performance in our next game. Today’s game was tough, the force majeure was the breeze, we were forced to change our pattern
because the breeze was against us”
Up next for the Toyin Ayinla side is an away trip to Ikorodu City on Saturday 5th March, 2022.
