With the Summer Games approaching at an accelerated pace, Nigeria’s sports minister, John Owan Enoh has come out with a down-to-earth verdict that time is running out.
He admitted that the attention of all sports followers is currently on the 13th African Games in Ghana, but stressed that Nigeria’s exploits in Accra are now past tense.
With that assertion top of his mind, the former senator stressed that all eyes must now be focused on the road to Paris 2024.
He added that he will take some personal steps in charting a progressive course for Team Nigeria, but stressed that all hands must be on deck to direct the ship, especially from the corporate sector.
Enoh posited: “The ministry is looking at various other funding models that are going to assist us. We will look for new areas of support that will take care of these particular athletes in these potential sports.
“We will go beyond our traditional medals winning events and look at sports that are not doing well. We have a huge population, and we are going to take advantage of that population. That population is really talented.
“So, we are going to go to other areas as well. We want to look at areas that are not doing well, see what the problems are, interrogate them, and see how they can contribute to our medals in Paris.”
He also affirmed the need for Nigeria’s athletes and coaches to not only think of winning gold medals in Paris, but declared that he equally wants them to target new global records in their respective events.
