Union Berlin star Taiwo Awoniyi has emerged as a summer transfer target for Premier League club Southampton, according to a report.
The Nigerian striker has impressed for Union this season, scoring 13 goals from 29 Bundesliga appearances. His goals has propelled the club towards European football next season as they currently sit 7th place in the league table with two games left.
According to Sportbild, Southampton are eyeing a summer move for the 24-year old in order to bolster their attack for next season. The Saints are in desperate need of a proven goalscorer to help them fix their goal-scoring problems, the report says.
Awoniyi is valued at €15m by Transfermarket. He joined Union from Liverpool permanently in June 2021 for a club record fee (€7.5m) after spending the 2020-21 season there on a season-long loan. He has 23 goals and 8 assists in 63 total appearances for The Iron Ones.
Awoniyi made his senior debut for Nigeria in a World Cup qualifier last year and has gone one to appear three more times for the three times African champions. He was part of the Super Eagles squad at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
