In an effort to make Somolu Newspaper Under-16 Open Table Tennis more exciting and memorable, the rescheduled sporting event has finally been fixed to hold from 21-22 November, 2019 at Agunbiade Table Tennis indoor hall, Somolu, Lagos instead of Mobolaji Johnson indoor sports hall which was the initial venue for the event.
The chief organizer of the event, Mr Sheriff Owolabi Bada said all hands are on deck to ensure the event comes to fruition and objectives of the championship achieved.
The 2-day sporting event will be parading participants from public schools in the Somolu community to further harness table tennis players that will do the community proud and as well propel the game to the next level.
“To us, table tennis is one game that has given us more honours and pride and we believe that this is where our strength lies. Focusing more on the game of table tennis is more ideal and we will do all we can to monitor the progress of the talents discovered both in their sporting career as well as their academic pursuit”.
“It’s a good thing we have the African champions both men and women (Jide Omotayo and Funke Oshonaike) in our fold and that alone is a record on its own which no local government or state in Nigeria has ever achieved.
“Jide and Funke are our ambassadors and we are so proud of them bringing honour and glory not only to Somolu community but to Lagos State, Nigeria and Africa continent as a whole.
“But that doesn’t mean we’ll go to bed and not do all that’s require to bring more world class players on board, we’ll continue to do all that’s necessary to maintain and sustain the records as far as the game is concerned,” Bada said.
However, top government functionaries, captain of industries, stakeholders in sports, academics and businessmen and women alike are expected to grace the event.
