In a tense Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash, Ademola Lookman’s clinical finish secured Nigeria’s spot in the semi-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph against a resilient Angola side.
The encounter marked Nigeria’s impressive continuation of their excellent quarter-final record, having lost only one of their previous 11 last-eight ties in the competition.
Angola, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, posed a formidable challenge for the Super Eagles.
In the early stages, the Black Sable Antelopes threatened as Gilberto’s flick from Fredy’s corner found Mabululu, but Stanley Nwabili’s exceptional save denied Angola an early lead.
Nigeria gradually asserted themselves in the contest, with Victor Osimhen heading over and later seeing another attempt saved by Angola’s goalkeeper, Antonio Dominique.
However, it was Lookman who broke the deadlock for Nigeria, capitalizing on a devastating break initiated by Moses Simon.
Lookman displayed clinical precision with a first-time finish, giving the Super Eagles a crucial 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Nigeria aimed to tighten their grip on the match, with chances falling to Alex Iwobi and Zaidu Sanusi.
Angola, lacking the same confidence since Lookman’s opener, almost levelled the scoreline when substitute Zini struck the post with a close-range effort.
Despite Osimhen’s disallowed goal through VAR, Nigeria’s defence stood firm against Angola’s attempts.
Gaspar thwarted Osimhen’s late effort, preventing Nigeria from doubling their lead. In the end, the Super Eagles secured victory, advancing to the AFCON semi-finals.
While Angola exits the tournament with heads held high after falling short of a historic semi-final appearance, Nigeria’s quest for a fourth AFCON title continues.
They will face the winners of the Cape Verde vs. South Africa clash in the semi-finals on February 7th in Bouaké.
Lookman’s decisive strike remains the highlight of a hard-fought quarter-final encounter, propelling Nigeria one step closer to AFCON glory.
