The management of Smart City FC of Lagos has dedicated the team’s conquest of this year’s Jagaban Cup to President Bola Tinubu.
This much was disclosed by the Lagos-based Nigeria National League (NNL) club’s founder/chairman, Prince Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, after his side defeated 36 Lion FC in Friday morning’s thrilling final at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
Adeboye, who is also the special adviser on grassroots sports to the minister of sports development, Senator John Owan Enoh, further praised his players for successfully defending the trophy they won last year.
He added that it was a symbolic achievement that came on the day of President Tinubu’s 72nd birthday but added that they would have a low-keyed celebration in the spirit of the nation’s current solemnly mood.
Adeboye retorted further: “I give thanks to Almighty God, and I dedicate this victory to the birthday of our president, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu (GCFR), of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This is his baby club.
“This club came into existence five seasons ago through the efforts of his son. Today, we are making him happy on his birthday, retaining the trophy back-to-back.
“I thank God for this victory. I thank God for the birthday of our great leader. We also thank God for the president telling the whole world that he is not celebrating his birthday this year.
“The president is mourning the soldiers that were recently killed in Delta State. That shows the love and passion he has for humanity.
“We thank God for him, and we will also not get carried away with our celebration. It’s going to be low-keyed. We also need to start preparing for our next league match and the next future tournament.
“Our message to all sportsmen and women, not only football, is for them to be dedicated, to be hardworking, and to always focus on their goals.
“With this achievement, I believe these lads can go further and play for the national teams of this our great country, Nigeria.”
