Nigerian forward Silas Nwankwo scored his second goal in two games to give Mjällby AIF a 1-0 away win over AIK in Sweden’s top division on Saturday.
Nwankwo scored the only goal of the game at the Friends Arena with a remarkable solo effort in the 40th. The 18-year-old took possession from 50 yards out in the opposing half and drove towards the penalty area. He avoided a number of tackles and kept his calm to poke the ball past AIK goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt and into the back of the net.
Nwankwo has now scored in back to back games after he netted a 78th minute leveller for Mjällby in their previous fixture against Norrköping which ended in a 1-1 draw. The winner at AIK was Nwankwo’s fourth from ten matches this season.
“It was incredible, I feel very good. The coach has said to me: “Always keep fighting and then you will score”, I just hoped for the goal and then it happened. I’ve seen it on TV and now it’s a reality for me. I think I will fall asleep happy today,” the striker said after the game.
Nwankwo joined Mjällby in February from Nasarawa United in Nigeria’s top flight. He finished as joint-top scorer of the 2020/21 NPFL season, tied on 19 goals with Charles Atshimene.
Mjällby’s victory over AIK is their fifth of the current season after 12 games. They are presently seventh in the Allsvenskan table and will host BK Hacken in their next fixture on Sunday, 10 July.
