One of the outstanding players in the squad of Off Season FFC (stylised as Off-Szn), Okpowo Kelvin has admitted that defensive lapses accounted for a mammoth 51-0 defeat suffered by his team against Warriors in week two of this season’s Showtime Flag Football League (SFFL) at Lekki, Lagos.
Sports247 was live at the venue and witnessed what was recorded as the biggest whitewash ever seen in the nascent history of flag football in Nigeria, but Kelvin declared that everyone in his team played to the best of their abilities.
He told Sports247 after the one-sided encounter: “We played well, but the game didn’t end in our favour. It did not end with what we wanted to our side. They said that they showed us mercy, but we tried our best.”
Kelvin continued by giving kudos to everyone who lined out for Off-Szn during the ill-fated fixture on Sunday, then pointed out that they actually played against the competition’s best team, who were very determined to storm back from losing their opening game the previous weekend.
The star performer continued, “We played against Warriors, which has a collection of the best players, and they showed their quality last season, in which they were unbeaten throughout. This time out, they lost their first match, and they needed to win this one in order to qualify for the semi-final. That’s why they defeated us 51-zero, though we tried our best.”
He concluded with a promise that Off-Szn’s players and technical crew will review missing points of their strategies for Sunday’s game, so that they will be able to bounce back and get a better result next weekend at the same venue.
“We now pray that our next game will be different, because we will try to improve. For this defeat, I will say we did not know how to defend well. So, we had lapses in the defending side, and most of the touchdowns that Warriors got were from our third and receiving.
That’s what gave them most of their points, and it ended 51-zero against us.
“Let me just say it was not our day, but we promise our fans that this will never happen again. They should just keep supporting us for our next game,” Kelvin earnestly appealed.
