The 2020/21 campaign of the Premier League came to its conclusion on Sunday in a dramatic last matchday.
Here, Sports247 runs through how
Nigerians fared in the English top-flight with ratings from the statistics website WhoScored.com.
1. Wilfred Ndidi, 7.25 – Leicester City
Wilfred Ndidi was immense at the base of midfield for Brendan Rodgers’s side as they finished in fifth place. His work rate, hard-tackling style, and defensive awareness provided Leicester City’s advanced players more freedom.
The midfielder led the team in interceptions (61), successful tackles made (96), and had a pass success rate of 87%. He also laid on four assists and scored one goal.
Ndidi played a key role as the Foxes won the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history.
2. Kelechi Iheanacho, 6.84 – Leicester City
Iheanacho’s renaissance in 2021 is one of the stories of the season. He waited until February for his first league goal and ended the campaign with 12 along with 4 assists in 25 matches as Leicester City narrowly missed out on a top-four finish.
He won the Premier League Player of the Month Award of March, Leicester City’s Goal of the Season Award, and became the first player to score in all seven days of the week in the same league season.
The 24-years old finished the season as the Foxes’ top scorer in all competitions with 19 goals. He scored four of them on their way to FA Cup glory.
3. Alex Iwobi, 6.54 – Everton FC
From left-winger to right-wing-back, to center midfield, Iwobi played in a handful of positions throughout.
Bar some moments of fleeting individual brilliance, the 25-years old had a less productive season as Everton finished tenth.
He made 30 appearances scoring just once and provided two assists in the Premier League.
4. Ola Aina, 6.63 – Fulham FC
The highlight of his season came in November he won the Premier League Goal of the Month Award.
Aside from that, Ola Aina was decent across the backline for Fulham nonetheless. He featured 31 times scoring twice and providing one assist.
On loan from Torino, it is left to be known what the future holds for the Nigerian international following Fulham’s relegation to the Championship.
5. Josh Maja, 6.39 – Fulham FC
Signed on loan from French side Bordeaux at the halfway point of the season, the forward could do little to prevent the Cottagers from going down.
He scored twice on his first start for Fulham and only managed to score one more time in his 15 total appearances.
6. Semi Ajayi, 6.40 – West Brom
The center-half made 33 appearances for West Brom as they finished second bottom in the table.
