Scope FC wins maiden Trophy five-a-side championship

After 11 weeks of a keenly contested tournament amongst 1, 080 teams, Scope FC has won the maiden edition of Trophy five-a-side grassroots tournament tagged, “Field of Honour,” which ended at the weekend at the Campos Mini-Stadium, Lagos Island.

 

The Trophy five-a-side tournament is a variation of association football, in which each team has five players, with four being outfield players and one goalkeeper.

In the third place match, Amsterdam FC of Obalende pummeled Rovers FC 6-0 to emerge as bronze winners shortly before the fiercely contested final in which Scope FC of Lagos beat Ifayemi FC of Ile-Ife 2-0.

Speaking at the event, Marketing Director, International Breweries Plc, Tolulope Adedeji said the tournament had shown the best of Nigeria’s grassroots football. “In these 11 weeks of the best of five-a-side football, we have witnessed grassroots football development that is second to none. This maiden edition had teams drawn from Ogun, Osun, Oyo and Lagos states,” she said.

For their efforts, Scope FC got N3 million cash prize, as well as an opportunity to meet renowned African football superstar, Samuel Eto’o.

They will also participate in the continental finals taking place in Tanzania later this year.

The organisers disclosed that the fans, who would accompany Scope FC to Tanzania was selected from the six geo-political zones through a raffle draw during the finale.

Four fans have already been selected to accompany the winning team to Tanzania on an all-expense paid trip, they said.

Captain of the winning team, Folorunso Sunday expressed his gratitude to International Breweries for providing a platform for youths to showcase their skills, adding, “We are super happy to have emerged the final winners and confident that we will win the overall tournament in Tanzania, bringing the Trophy home.”
