The much-anticipated novelty football match as part of the St. Finbarr’s College Old Boys Association (SFCOBA) 94Set 30th Anniversary Celebration was played at St. Finbarr’s College field on December 6th, 2024.
It was a thrilling encounter between the Science Class and the Commercial and Art Class teams, but the Science Class dominated from start to finish, claiming a 2-0 victory.
The game, officiated by the Lagos State Football Referee Association, was action-packed and full of memorable moments. The first half began with the Science Class taking control of possession, pressing their opponents relentlessly.
The turning point of the half came when ID Cabasa of the Commercial and Art Class team was brought down in the box, leading to a penalty. However, the penalty was missed, keeping the game goalless at the time.
Moments later, the Science Class found their breakthrough. The chairman of the Anniversary Committee, Dr. Thaddeus Ugwueke, delivered a precise assist to Chris, who slotted home the first goal with precision, putting the Science Class ahead before halftime.
In the second half, the Commercial and Art Class team fought valiantly to equalize but were unable to break through the solid defense of the Science Class.
The game was sealed when Uti scored a brilliant second goal for the Science Class. A well-timed volley beat the Commercial and Art goalkeeper, Robo, leaving the crowd in awe and cementing the victory.
The match concluded with cheers and applause from the spectators, who were treated to a spectacle of skill, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. ID Cabasa was named Man of the Match for his exceptional efforts and contributions on the field despite his team’s loss.
Dr. Thaddeus Ugwueke praised both teams after the match, saying, “This game was not just about winning; it was about reliving our youthful days, bonding as a family, and celebrating our shared history. Everyone here is a winner.”
