Sanwo-Olu Applauds Access Bank Lagos City Marathon as a Global Sporting Showcase

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has hailed the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, emphasizing that the event is more than just a race—it is a celebration of endurance, determination, and the vibrant spirit of Lagos.

Participating in a fun run and witnessing the event firsthand, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the resilience and expertise displayed by athletes, organizers, and supporters, acknowledging their role in the marathon’s continued success.

Speaking on the impact of the race, he said: “The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon is not just a competition but a symbol of endurance, determination, and the dynamic energy of Lagos. Thousands of athletes from around the world have once again proven that Lagos is a hub for sporting excellence and global events.”

He further congratulated all participants and stakeholders, reaffirming the state’s commitment to fostering a thriving environment for sports, tourism, and opportunities.

The marathon, which holds a World Athletics Gold Label status, attracted elite athletes from across the world and featured intense competition across various categories.

In the men’s category, Kenya’s Edwin Koch Kibet emerged victorious, claiming the $50,000 top prize. Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa won the women’s race.

A proud moment for Nigeria came as Nyango Gyang Boyi made history, finishing in the top 10 and securing a money-winning placement. Boyi clinched 8th place with a time of 2:25:41.58, earning $4,000 in prize money. Additionally, he was awarded N2 million for finishing as the top Nigerian in the race.

With this successful edition, Lagos continues to establish itself as a leading destination for world-class sporting events.
