Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze’s club Villarreal has fired club legend and coach Javier Calleja after an unimpressive start to the 2018/2019 La Liga Santander season where they are currently placed 17th on the log after 15 games with three wins, five draws and seven losses and has been replaced by former Atletico Madrid player Luis Garcia Plaza.
Calleja who was capped 129 times by Villarreal as a player also managed the team’s youth side from 2012 to 2017 before being promoted to the position of first team coach in 2017. Calleja has struggled to get the needed results to put the team in a comfortable position and after Saturday’s 3 – 2 home loss to Celta Vigo, the management decided to relieve him of his position.
New boss Plaza has a lot to do to reposition the club after being announced as coach today. The former Atletico Madrid defender was coach of Villarreal’s B team between 2005 and 2006 before moving to Elche, Getafe and Levante as first team coach. Plaza’s last coaching position was with Beijing Rehne in the Chinese Super League.
Villarreal has reached an agreement with Plaza that will see the 46-year old become manager for the Yellow Submarines first team until the end of the season.
