Fast-rising female sprinter, Rosemary Chukwuma made history by winning the women’s 100m gold medal at the ongoing Youth Olympic Games.
In running to gold on Monday, Chukwuma grabbed Nigeria’s first medal on day five of the 2018 Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Chukwuma, who was part of Nigeria’s 4×100 women’s team that won gold at the African Senior Athletics Championship in Asaba this year, crossed the finish line at 11.17 seconds to clinch gold.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in 4x100m, went into the race with a personal Best of 11.55 seconds, and finished third in the first stage of the race with a time of 12.03 seconds.
Chukwuma, who also won gold at the 100m and 200m at the 2018 Africa Youth Games in Algeria, was Nigeria’s youngest athlete at Gold Coast 2018, where she anchored the 4x100m relay.
Following her latest feat, the 2017 under-18 Nigeria champion admitted how happy she was and declared that she satisfied with her outing.
“I am happy and satisfied because before coming to Argentina I did not have good results.
“I started to train in 2016 and I traveled to Australia last year to prepare in this discipline, then continued training in Nigeria
“I was scared that I would not get what I hoped for at these Games. I did not think that it was possible, but God sees to everything.”
