Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has offered to help the Nigerian team’s captain, John Mikel Obi get a new club this month.
Sports247.ng gathered that Rohr is not happy with Mikel’s recent absences from the Eagles’ fixtures, but admitted it was due to the midfielder’s fitness issues at his former club, Tianjin Teda of China.
Now that Mikel has cut his contract with Teda, Rohr says the former Lyn Oslo of Norway and Chelsea of England star needs to get a new club in order to be part of the build-up to the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Rohr stressed that only players with regular appearances at their clubs and those lining out in the main squads will be in the picture for AFCON 2019, as he does not want to saddle himself with bench-warmers.
However, with Mikel yet to get a club since quitting Teda at the start of the year, the Eagles’ skipper could be the first victim of Rohr’s rules, hence the France-German gaffer’s readiness to help the star get a club.
This was disclosed by a source close to the tactician, who stressed that Mikel will not be included in Rohr’s AFCON programme unless he can get a club in the ongoing transfer window and then start playing regularly.
The source added: “Rohr has already told Mikel to look for a club ad start playing, before thinking of (a shirt) with the Super Eagles. The coach has also volunteered to help him in the search for a new club.”
