Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has spoken out over the continued snub Nigerian players are facing in the annual awards of Confederation of African (CAF), but the Franco-German tactician believes it is simply because the country lacks top stars of the present dispensation.
In contrast with what used to subsist, when Nigeria dominated the awards from 1993 to 1996, Rohr believes the quality of individual players from Africa’s most populous nation has dropped.
Rohr stated as much during a television programme monitored in Lagos by sports247.ng, in which he noted that the quality of Nigeria’s players has dropped from the level they had in early 90s.
He, however, expressed hope that the array of young players coming into the Eagles will be able to set things back on track for the country, starting with a solid performance at the Afirca Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The former handler of Niger Republic, Gabon and Burkina Faso posited: ”We don’t have big stars in our team.
“You see none of our players was in the African Team of the Year, we don’t have these players who Nigeria had in the past.
“Our strength is playing collective football with good spirit. Let’s work with this kind of spirit all the time.”
