Stanley Eguma expressed his disappointment after Rivers United lost their title in the NPL
Super Six playoffs on the final day against Enyimba.
Despite a 1-1 draw against Enyimba on match-day five, Rivers United was unable to defend their title and finished third in the
six-team table.
Enyimba claimed their ninth league title and the first under the guidance of former Super
Eagles star Finidi George. The match saw Ekene Awazie give Enyimba the lead on the 39th minute, but Rivers United’s Nyima Nwagua equalized on the 48th minute. Unfortunately for Rivers United, the draw wasn’t enough to secure the title, and they will now participate in the CAF Confederation Cup in the following season.
Reflecting on the loss, Eguma expressed his disappointment, stating, “I feel disappointed
that we fought gallantly but failed to defend our title. We had plenty of chances to score and take the lead, but unfortunately, we couldn’t convert them.” He acknowledged that their late start in the game and the missed opportunities had a significant impact on the final result.
Eguma expressed his gratitude to the organizers of the NPL Super Six playoffs and
emphasized the need for more televised games. He noted the progress of Nigerian football, stating, “It’s evident that Nigerian football has come a long way and has reached a global standard.
It’s time for people to recognize the efforts we’re putting into the league.” Eguma
stressed the importance of broadcasting the league on television, believing it would attract more viewers and contribute to its growth.
In the final standings of the NPL Super Six playoffs, Enyimba finished in first place, followed by Remo in second. Rivers United settled for third place, while Sunshine, Bendel Insurance, and Lobi occupied the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, respectively.
Although disappointed with their final outcome, Rivers United’s participation in the NPL
Super Six playoffs showcased their competitive spirit and dedication. As they prepare for the CAF Confederation Cup, the team will aim to regroup and strive for success in the
continental competition.
