These events aim to unearth talented athletes who will represent the state at the National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun State.
State Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Christopher Green, revealed these plans after presenting an N50 million check to the State Handball team, the “Rivers Queens.” This financial reward was bestowed upon the team by Governor Sir Siminialayi Fubara for their outstanding performance as champions at the National Handball Tournament in Edo State.
Green expressed his commitment to revamping sports in Rivers State in alignment with the Governor’s vision and sports development policy. He emphasized that the Governor’s policy is to elevate all sports to equal importance, ensuring no sport plays second fiddle.
The Commissioner praised the achievement of the Rivers Queens, highlighting it as a significant milestone. He noted that this was the first time a female team from the state had secured a trophy in a sport outside of football and festivals.
Green also outlined his plans for the immediate, medium-term, and long-term development of sports in the state. He expressed his determination to bring back the era when Rivers State athletes were renowned at both national and international levels.
In his efforts to nurture young talent, Green intends to invite elite athletes to mentor and guide upcoming athletes from Rivers State towards achieving greatness in the world of sports.
These initiatives represent the state government’s commitment to sports development and talent discovery, with the aim of promoting sports excellence across a wide range of disciplines in Rivers State.
