Rivers Hoopers Star Kelvin Amayo Reflects On Late Arrival, Vows Stronger Display Ahead of NBPL Final Four

Rivers Hoopers guard, Kelvin Amayo, has opened up about his late arrival to the team’s camp ahead of the Nigerian Basketball Premier League (NBPL) Final Eight, admitting that he only had one full training session with the squad before the playoffs tipped off.

Despite the limited preparation, Amayo played a key role in helping the Hoopers secure qualification for the Final Four after their 83–69 victory over Kwara Falcons.

In a chat with reporters, Amayo revealed that his initial plan was to integrate gradually into the team’s system due to his delayed arrival from overseas commitments.

“I had to travel straight down and join the team immediately,” he said. “It wasn’t the easiest situation, but everyone was supportive. The coaches and my teammates made it easier to adjust quickly.”

The guard acknowledged that his conditioning wasn’t at its best during the Final Eight, but he expressed optimism about regaining full fitness before the next stage of the competition.

With a two-week break before the Final Four in Lagos, Amayo said he intends to use the period to train extensively and sharpen his game.

“I’m improving with every session,” he stated confidently. “The break gives me time to focus on fitness, shooting, and chemistry with the guys. When we get to Lagos, I’ll be ready to give my all.”

Reflecting on the team’s progress, Amayo praised the Hoopers’ resilience and unity, describing the group as “a family built on trust and hunger for success.” He also credited head coach Ogoh Odaudu for maintaining a winning mentality within the squad.

“The coach keeps us focused,” he added. “We know what’s at stake — a third straight NBPL title. That’s our mission, and we’re going for it.”

Rivers Hoopers, nicknamed The KingsMen, will now resume preparations in Port Harcourt before heading to Lagos for the championship round, as they aim to defend their crown and cement their dominance in Nigerian basketball.
