Rising Star Faith Okwosa Stuns Fans at AFN Golden League, Sets Sights on National Championships

Faith Okwosa, the rising star in junior athletics, left her fans in awe during the final of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria Golden League held at the Nest of Champions in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Now, the spotlight is on Okwosa as she aims to replicate her stellar form at the upcoming National Championships scheduled for July 6 to 9 in Benin City.

In an exhilarating display of speed on the track, Okwosa showcased her talent and determination, clocking a personal best time of 11.35 seconds in the 100m sprint. Her remarkable performance left her competitors trailing behind, with Justina Eyakpobeyan finishing in 11.51 seconds and Praise Ofuoku in 11.66 seconds.

AFN head coach, Seigha Porbeni, hailed Okwosa as their own version of the ‘Pocket Rocket’ and emphasized the importance of keeping a close eye on her promising career. With her exceptional speed and potential, Okwosa has firmly established herself as a talent to watch in Nigerian athletics.

In the men’s 100m race, Consider Ekanem also achieved a personal best time of 10.30 seconds, edging out Sunday Okon Israel who finished closely with a time of 10.32 seconds. John Ibok secured the third position with a time of 10.80 seconds.

Chidera Johnson showcased his prowess in the men’s 400m event, crossing the finish line in an impressive 46.66 seconds. Meanwhile, Patience Okon-George asserted her dominance in the women’s 400m race, securing a comfortable victory in 52.64 seconds.

The men’s long jump event witnessed Godfrey C. Edwards maintaining his quest to break the elusive 8-meter barrier, as he achieved a commendable distance of 7.79m, matching his performance from the Benin leg of the Meet. However, in the men’s javelin throw, Samuel Jure Adams fell short of his previous mark, recording a distance of 72.97m compared to the 73m he achieved in Benin City.

With the National Championships just around the corner, anticipation is building for an exhilarating showcase of athletic talent. Coach Porbeni expressed confidence in a full house of competitors and exciting performances, even hinting at the possibility of witnessing new records being shattered. As the Nigerian athletics community eagerly awaits the National Trials, all eyes will be on the extraordinary athletes aiming to make their mark and secure a place in the record books.
