Rhasidat Adeleke, the Dublin-born sprinter of Nigerian heritage, has become a formidable force in Irish athletics, holding national records in the 100m (11.13s), 200m (22.34s), and 400m (49.07s).
Her remarkable achievements have established her as the fastest woman in Ireland’s history.
Adeleke’s journey began at Tallaght Athletic Club before she moved to the University of Texas, where she honed her skills and developed into a world-class athlete. In 2023, she became the first Irish woman to win an NCAA title and decided to turn professional, forgoing her final year of eligibility.
In the lead-up to the Paris 2024 Olympics, Adeleke’s performance has been nothing short of spectacular. She recently clocked her personal best of 49.07s in the 400m, the fourth fastest time globally this year. This performance earned her a silver medal at the European Championships, further solidifying her status as a podium contender in Paris.
Despite facing adversity, including racist abuse online, Adeleke has shown resilience and determination. Supported by her coach at the University of Texas, Edrick Floreal, she has overcome these challenges, demonstrating her mental toughness and commitment to her sport.
At the European Championships, Adeleke also played a crucial role in Ireland’s mixed 4x400m relay team, winning gold, and secured a silver medal in the women’s 4x400m relay. These accomplishments not only highlight her individual talent but also her ability to excel in team events.
As Adeleke prepares to compete in the 400m at the Paris Olympics, she remains focused and optimistic. With her record-breaking times and relentless drive, she aims to inspire a generation and bring home Ireland’s first athletics gold medal.
