Revamping Football in Akwa Ibom: A Unified Vision for Success

In an effort to elevate the standard of football in Akwa Ibom State, the Akwa Ibom State Football Association (AKSFA) organized a two-day seminar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

The seminar, held from Thursday, July 25th to Friday, July 26th, 2024, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including football coaches, academics, members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), and other key players in the football community.

The theme, “Repositioning the Game of Football in Akwa Ibom State for Better Results,” underscored the commitment to enhancing the sport’s quality and impact.

Discussions covered a wide array of topics essential to the sport’s development. Chief among these were the new and existing rules and regulations, the critical role of coaches in grassroots football, the intricacies of the transfer market, and strategies for maximizing sponsorship through social media.

One participant remarked, “This seminar has provided us with invaluable insights and practical tools to uplift football standards in our state.”

Stakeholders expressed heartfelt gratitude to the State Governor, Pastor Umo Emo, for revitalizing the Governor’s Cup and supporting state teams in various leagues.

The Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, was also lauded for his unwavering support of state and private clubs.

“The collaboration between the government and football bodies is key to our success,” emphasized a local coach.

The seminar concluded with a consensus on the need for stronger synergy among the government, FA, referees, coaches, and other stakeholders.

The call to action included encouraging proprietors of football academies to register their clubs with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and affiliate with local football councils. Furthermore, participants urged a focus on youth football to ensure sustainable growth.

Appeals were made to the state government for logistical support, including the provision of a Hilux van, a bus, and monthly subvention for the State FA.

Participants also stressed the importance of continuous education through refresher courses for local FA members, coaches, referees, and agents to align with international best practices.

In a unified voice, stakeholders appreciated the successive state governments for their investment in sports infrastructure, notably the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. They called for the continued maintenance of these facilities to keep Akwa Ibom State as a premier football destination.

The seminar underscored a collective resolve to reposition football in Akwa Ibom State, driven by cooperation, innovation, and strategic planning. As Mr. Samuel Umoh, Chairman of AKSFA, concluded, “Together, we can make Akwa Ibom a beacon of football excellence in Nigeria.”
