Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State noted the critical role of referees in advancing Nigerian football to international recognition.
Speaking at the 2024 Nigeria Football Referees Association Annual General Meeting in Yenagoa, the governor, represented by Honourable Daniel Igali, Commissioner for Sports Development, stressed the need for fair and professional refereeing.

Governor Diri noted that referees significantly influence game outcomes, necessitating fairness and professionalism in their duties.
He praised the progress Nigerian referees have made over time and advocated for better welfare to ensure their impartiality and justice in officiating.
“It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the General Annual Meeting of the Nigeria Referees Association here in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State in 2024.
I extend a warm welcome to all referees, officials, and distinguished guests present here today,” Igali said on behalf of the governor.
He further added that Governor Diri’s passion for sports and football development is evident in the initiatives and achievements around the state.
Igali called on referees to uphold the highest standards of officiating, preparing themselves for international stages and contributing to the global growth of football.
He pointed out Bayelsa State’s readiness to support initiatives that benefit football and sports, promoting mutual growth and success.
Additionally, Igali spoke about the state government’s plans to build a 30,000-seat stadium to accommodate Bayelsa’s growing sports appetite.
He reiterated the state’s commitment to using sports as a cornerstone for human capital development.
“Bayelsa State has already hosted four national sporting events this year, with more to come before the year’s end.
Sports remain a cornerstone of this administration’s commitment to prosperity and development,” Igali stated.
The President of the Nigeria Referees Association, Alhaji Sani Zubair, expressed gratitude for the support received during the AGM and appreciated Governor Diri’s dedication to sports development.
He noted that the governor’s commitment is seen as a symbol of hope within the sports community.
Zubair affirmed that the Nigeria Referees Association would continue equipping referees with the latest innovations, ensuring their participation in international events.
