In a powerful embrace of his cultural roots, Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Justin Madubuike has announced that he will now go by his Nigerian name, Nnamdi.
The name change comes just in time for the NFL season opener, where the Ravens will face the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

In a recent interview, Madubuike, now Nnamdi, shared the significance of this decision. “Coming from Nigerian culture, our parents give us an American name and a Nigerian name,” he explained.
“When we were growing up as little kids, they addressed us by our Nigerian name. So Nnamdi, I believe in my heart, that’s my real name.”
Nnamdi is coming off an extraordinary season in which he recorded 13 sacks, earning him Second Team All-Pro honors. His stellar performance led the Ravens to reward him with a four-year, $98 million contract extension.
This moment of career success prompted him to reflect deeply on his identity and the importance of staying true to himself.
“I just started to keep everything real in terms of my life,” Nnamdi said. “After I signed my contract, I realized I needed to keep doing that. I just felt like when I keep it real, I’m a better player and a better man. So I decided to go with my real name. Nnamdi is my real name.”
As Nnamdi prepares to debut his new name on the field, he will be looking to make a strong statement against the Chiefs, seeking revenge for last season’s AFC Championship Game loss.
