Rainoil National Tennis Championship Heats Up As Quarterfinals Begin In Lagos

The quarterfinal matches of the Rainoil National Tennis Open will serve off today, February 7, 2025, at the Ikoyi Club, Lagos, featuring an exciting lineup of top contenders.

Tournament top seed Christopher Bulus, fresh from representing Nigeria in the Davis Cup Playoffs against South Africa, dominated Endurance Ehigiamusoe with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 victory to secure his quarterfinal spot.

His national teammate Canis Abua also advanced after defeating Lucky Danjuma 6-2, 6-4, while fellow Davis Cup player Michael Emmanuel eased past Yusuf Abubakar 6-2, 6-2.

A major upset unfolded in the fourth round as Abayomi Phillips staged a remarkable comeback to eliminate former Nigerian champion and tournament second seed Uche Oparaoji in a thrilling 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 battle. Phillips, who trains at Mainland Tennis Club in Lagos, will face fellow mainlander Matthew Abamu in today’s quarterfinal clash.

In the Women’s Singles, Etoro Bassey of GEUF Tennis Academy in Akwa Ibom will take on Success Ogunjobi from Abuja.

Bassey progressed after top seed Omolayo Bamidele retired following a 6-3 first-set loss and a 4-0 deficit in the second set. Ogunjobi booked her place in the quarters with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over veteran Stella Udokwelu.

Nigeria’s top-ranked female player Khadijat Mohammed will face the in-form Patience Onebamhoin in another quarterfinal showdown.

Mohammed cruised past Destiny Okhinaye 6-0, 7-6(1), while Onebamhoin continued her impressive form with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Khadijat Salami.

The Rainoil National Tennis Open, which began on Monday, February 3, will conclude on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
