Okonkwo, who has played for top clubs like Enyimba, Rivers United, and Lobi Stars, lauded Governor Sule’s unwavering support.
“I must tell you the truth, I feel good. I feel very, very okay, and I give thanks to God, who made it possible,” Okonkwo told Sports 247, reflecting on their promotion.
He mentioned the governor’s efforts in ensuring regular salaries and retaining key players, which were crucial for the team’s success.
Nasarawa United secured their NPFL promotion with victories against El-Kanemi Warriors and Sokoto United.
Okonkwo acknowledged the challenges they faced, especially coming from a goal down to win their second match.
“It wasn’t that easy in the field of play, especially when we were a goal down. I thank God for the boys. I thank God for how we were able to come back and get the equalising goal in the first half,” he added.
Okonkwo expressed his gratitude towards the players, club management, and government officials for their collective efforts.
He noted the difficulty of competing in the NNL after experiencing the NPFL, describing it as a step backwards.
However, the governor’s commitment ensured the team’s resilience and quick return to the top flight.
“The governor made everything possible to ensure that the team maintained the big boys, and he made sure that the salary the club was paying was regular.
He urged them not to go and promised them that they would be paid whatever they wanted,” Okonkwo stated.
He also thanked the club chairman, the permanent secretary, and the fans for their unwavering support.
As Nasarawa United prepares for their final group match against Sporting Supreme FC, Okonkwo and his teammates remain focused on securing their place in the NPFL, determined to build on their recent successes and the solid foundation laid by Governor Sule’s support.
