President Tinubu Honors Super Eagles With MON Title, Other Gifts For AFCON Performance

President Bola Tinubu has recognized the exemplary performance of the Super Eagles national team and their officials at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Cote d’Ivoire by awarding them the prestigious national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).

In a ceremony held at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, President Tinubu commended the team for their outstanding efforts in fostering unity within the country through their remarkable performance on the field.

Despite finishing second in the tournament, he encouraged the team to hold their heads high and maintain their team spirit.

In further recognition of their achievement, the federal government, represented by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has granted each member of the team a plot of land.

Additionally, they are set to receive a block of flats, with the locations yet to be announced.

During the ceremony, William Troost-Ekong, the team’s vice-captain and most valuable player, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support.

Troost-Ekong expressed a desire to present a trophy rather than a silver medal, highlighting the team’s aspirations for future success.

The Nigerian team emerged as Silver medalists in the AFCON tournament, narrowly losing the trophy to hosts Cote d’Ivoire in a thrilling final match on Sunday night.

The ceremony at the State House was attended by all team members and officials, including Alex Iwobi, who had faced cyber-attacks over the Super Eagles’ loss to Ivory Coast.
