Power Rationing in Abuja: Chijioke Okwuokenye Explains Reduced Supply Due to Ongoing Road Project

Chijioke Okwuokenye, the Managing Director of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), has clarified the reasons behind the recent power supply reduction in the Federal Capital Territory.

Speaking on a television program, Okwuokenye stated that while major areas in Abuja typically enjoy between 20 to 24 hours of electricity daily, the supply has been reduced to an average of 16 hours in most affected areas.

He emphasized that the city will not experience a total blackout but that power availability will be rationed to ensure distribution across various locations.

The interruption, he explained, is due to a shutdown of a transmission station necessitated by an ongoing road project in the area.

Last Friday, AEDC announced that several parts of Abuja would face power disruptions from January 6 to 21, 2025. The outages are due to the relocation of the 33KV DC Airport Feeder and the 132KV Kukwaba-Apo Transmission Line Towers along the Outer Southern Expressway, which is being undertaken by the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA)
