Nigeria’s Super Eagles were defeated 4-0 by Portugal in their international match on Thursday in Lisbon, reports Sports247.ng. It was a frustrating night overall for Jose Peseiro’s side who were outclassed from start to finish.
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was the star for the Portuguese, scoring two goals in the first half. Goncalo Ramos and Joao Mario added to the score in the second period.
Fernandes opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes when he tapped home from close range. He was assisted by his club teammate Diogo Dalot.
Portugal continued their dominance and came close to doubling their lead on several occasions. They got their second goal of the game in the 35th minute from a penalty. Super Eagles debutant, Bright Osayi-Samuel handled the ball inside the area and Fernandes stepped up to send Francis Uzoho the wrong way.
Peseiro made two substitutions at halftime, bringing on Samuel Chukwueze for Ademola Lookman and Frank Onyeka for Wilfred Ndidi. Portugal made four changes of their own.
Nigeria began the second half more composedly, but faded as the game neared its conclusion. Chukwueze came close in the 71st minute, but Portugal’s goalkeeper Rui Patricio saved his effort.
Osayi-Samuel made amends for the penalty he gave up in the first half by earning one for Nigeria in the 80th minute. Substitute Emmanuel Dennis failed to convert from 12 yards out.
Goncalo Ramos and Joao Mario both scored two quick goals for Portugal in the 82nd and 84th minutes to put the game to bed and condemn Nigeria to defeat.
